MAP: Bicycle-Related Traffic Accidents in Eagan

Eagan police have responded to at least 16 reported traffic accidents involving a bicyclist in 2011 and 2012, according to crash statistics provided by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

At least two of those accidents resulted in significant injuries for the bicyclist caught in the accident, according to police records. In one case, a bicyclist suffered a broken leg following a collision with a car at the intersection of Cliff Road and Cliff Drive. In another incident on May 31, a bicyclist was hospitalized with a collarbone injury following the crash. Both accidents took place near the intersection of Cliff Road and Cedar Avenue.

A handful of other incidents resulted in less severe injuries, including bruises and scrapes, according to reports.

In 2011, there were 963 reported bicycle accidents across Minnesota, compared to 898 reported crashes the previous year, according to data provided by the Department of Public Safety. Those accidents resulted in 937 reported injuries and five fatalities statewide.

Most bicycle crashes occur between April and September, and one-third of all accidents take place during the afternoon rush hour between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., according to statewide statistics.
