Get Out: Weekend Activities In and Around Eagan

A fine arts festival, a poetry workshop and a book signing are among the many local events scheduled this weekend.


  • When/Where: Throughout the day on April 19, 20, and 21.
    Why Go:
    Inver Hills will host its first Fine Arts Festival on April 19, 20 and 21, with more than 50 sessions presented by the college’s Art, English, Music and Theatre departments. Participants can attend glass fusing, acting and flash fiction workshops; sit as a model in the portrait photo booth; view improv performances, student-directed one-act plays and a student film project; learn bookbinding, pinhole photography and how to play steel drums; and much, much more. The event also includes a solo song contest, concerts, and lectures and demonstrations from visiting photographers, artists and authors. Additionally, all participants are invited to make their mark on the Inver Hills campus by helping to paint a large-scale mural that will remain in the college for years to come.

  • When/Where:
    7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 20 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rosemount, and Saturday, April 21 at Grace Lutheran Church in Apple Valley.
    Why Go:
    The Minnesota Valley Men’s and Women’s Chorales will “sing into spring” with their upcoming concerts. Both choirs are comprised of men and women from all walks of life, (college age through seniors) and its members hail from communities throughout the Twin Cities.  The concerts will begin at 7:30 pm. A variety of all styles of music will be featured from both the men’s and women’s chorales individually, as well as a mass number combining 175 voices in a grand finale.
    Cost: Tickets are available at the door for $5.

  • When/Where: 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, at .
    Why Go:
    Learn how to let nature inspire the poet in you during National Poetry Month with award-winning poet Joyce Sidman. A portion of the workshop will be spent outdoors- weather permitting. Supplies provided. A Minnesota Legacy program. Ages 8-12. Registration required.

  • When/Where: 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 22 at in Eagan.
    Why Go:
    Author Eric Manos is an American who now makes his home in Germany. He is a songwriter, drummer and avid finger-style guitarist. His children's book, "The Little Guitar," is an inspiring tale about the healing power of music and friendship with a universal message that appeals to children and adults alike.
    Cost: Free.

  • When/Where: 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 20 at the Burnsville Performing Arts Center in Burnsville.
    Why Go:
    A gritty, innovative play based on Euripides' "Hippolytus" and Racine's "Phaedra"—radically reconstructed and placed in Burnsville's Trailer Park world. A world in which Phaedra can't resist sleeping with her stepson and Theseus is a distracted businessman. It is a world in which a garage band stands in for a Greek chorus and townspeople sit around the gas station talking about the extraordinary relationships they have had and the many unconventional ways that "true love" determines the course of our lives. Suggested for mature audiences.
    Cost: Tickets are $20.
