Get Out: What to Do Over the Holiday Weekend

Wondering what family friendly activities are available this holiday weekend? Here are a few suggestions.

  • Beef Up at the Eagan YMCA
    The Eagan YMCA is open from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve. If you want to burn off some of the kids' energy or lose a few calories just before your Christmas dinner, the is the perfect venue. The YMCA has a lap pool, water slide, basketball courts and a kids gym, not to mention a retinue of fitness classes running throughout Christmas Eve.
  • Get Some Fresh Air at Lebanon Hills
    Like the Y, will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 24. If you don't mind the cold, you can rent cross-country skis or snowshoes and explore 14.6 miles of groomed trails in the 2,000-acre park.
  • Feel the Adrenaline at Buck Hill
    The slopes at Buck Hill in Burnsville will be open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, which means you and the family can strap on skis or snowboards, or even hop on a snow tube over the holiday weekend. On Christmas Eve, a lift ticket runs $20, while on Christmas Day, normal rates apply.
  • Catch a Classic Christmas Movie on TV
    Plenty of TV networks will be airing Christmas specials throughout the weekend. The 1946 film "It's a Wonderful Life" will be on NBC at 8 p.m. on Saturday. "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" will run on ABC at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday. TBS is even running "A Christmas Story" for 24 hours nonstop on Saturday.
  • See the lights at Phalen Park in St. Paul
    If you're up for a short drive, the Holiday Lights in the Park event in St. Paul is well worth the trip. Cruise around the park and see sights like the Enchanted Castle and 50 other displays from the warmth of your car. The lights are open from 5:30 to 10 p.m. nightly, including holidays.
