Sumunar Exposes Eagan to Indonesian Culture

Performance will take place Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at Caponi Art Park.

A Minneapolis-based performing group will share Indonesian sounds and culture on Sunday.

Sumunar Indonesian Gamelan and Dance Ensemble will perform Sunday at Caponi Art Park and Learning Center at 6:30 p.m. in its Theater in the Woods outdoor amphitheater.

The performance, which will last about 60 to 90 minutes, consists of a percussion orchestra and dance ensemble. The percussion orchestra includes xylophones, metallophones, drums, gongs and various Indonesian instruments. The group on Sunday will be 15 or 16 people, said Jenna Strank, communications coordinator for the Eagan park and learning center.

Strank said "sumunar" is an Indonesian word for glowing, brilliant light.

The event offers Eagan a chance to learn about another culture and experience something new.

"I think it fills a gap that’s needed to showcase other cultures," Strank said.

Strank recommends arriving early to find a seat. Ring Mountain Creamery and Cafe will also be there selling their signature treats. The event is free, although a $4 donation is suggested for each audience member. Caponi Art Park is at 1220 Diffley Road. People can park there or at the overflow lot at the Lexington-Diffley Athletic Field, Strank said.

"It's going to be a lot of fun," she said.
