All My Sons, Arthur Miller's first successful Broadway play, is a post-World War II drama about the Kellers, a seemingly All American family, and their struggle to find balance after the oldest son, Larry, is reported lost in the war. The mother, Kate, clutches onto the belief that her son is still alive even after three and a half years. It is this belief that enables her to continue to support her husband Joe, concealing the truth of a dreadful crime that he committed. Joe is a self-made man who struggles for success and the American Dream, holding prosperity and the love for his family above all else. The play examines the moral dilemma of placing the comfort of one's own family above the larger responsibility to humankind and their safety.
