Big Lots Open in Eagan, Grand Opening Friday
The retailer has enjoyed brisk business since opening in Eagan last Thursday. A formal Grand Opening is planned for this weekend.
Eagan area fans of discount retailer Big Lots can now save on gas in addition to whatever they put in their carts with the last week. The approximately 20,000 square foot store is the third to open in the Twin Cities this year joining Woodbury and Maple Grove as the retailer’s latest entries into the Minnesota market.
Big Lots, known for its revolving inventory of close-out and liquidation items, has more than 1,400 stores in 47 states and the Ohio-based retailer is listed as a Fortune 500 company. The Eagan store is seventh overall in Minnesota. Rochester, St. Cloud, St. Louis Park and Brooklyn Center also have Big Lots locations. The Eagan location currently employs about 30 full-time workers.
The Eagan location features furniture, groceries and a plethora of other household items. One corner of the store is already devoted to Christmas décor and displays. Items are bought from liquidators and close-outs and are typically not restocked once a store’s inventory is depleted. Shoppers can typically find new items with each visit.

Eagan store manager Peter Luppke, who transferred over to the Eagan location from Brooklyn Center, said he was happy with the initial response from Eagan residents and the surrounding area.
“Business has been excellent,” said Luppke of the store’s opening weekend. “We haven’t really advertised yet but we’ve had a lot of traffic come through.”

Luppke says he has seen a steady stream of Eagan residents come through the store in addition to customers from Farmington, Rosemount and other surrounding communities.
Luppke says many customers have voiced their thanks for locating to Eagan.
“One of the most frequent customer reactions has been ‘finally,’ a Big Lots near where I live,” said Luppke.
A special Grand Opening event is being planned for this Friday, Oct. 28 with special deals and savings to be announced. The Grand Opening event will run through the following week.
