The self-serve yogurt craze has arrived in Eagan.

CherryBerry, an Oklahoma-based restaurant franchise, is the latest eatery to open up shop in Eagan. The family-friendly yogurt shop, which will offer a relaxed atmosphere late hours on the weekend, is located on the west side of the Eagan Promenade, adjacent to Potbelly Sandwich Shop.

The restaurant will cater to both health food junkies and customers with a sweet tooth, according to CherryBerry District Manager Dan Nelson. The concept is sweet but simple: Patrons are encouraged to walk in, grab a cup and start mixing. CherryBerry offers a rotating menu of 14 frozen yogurt flavors and more than 50 toppings. The final result is priced by weight.

The yogurt selection includes fat-free, low-fat and sugar-free options, and toppings range from granola or fresh fruit to brownies and M&Ms.

CherryBerry was founded in 2010 outside Tulsa, Okla. In the last two years, the brand has expanded prodigiously; since June 2011, the company has sold over 200 franchises across the U.S. CherryBerry currently operates six locations in the Twin Cities area, including storefronts in Burnsville and Woodbury, Nelson said. The company also has locations in St. Cloud and Baxter, and has plans to open as many as five additional locations by March 2012, Nelson added.

The Eagan restaurant, Nelson said, will feature a lounge area with sofas and armchairs, three TVs tuned to separate channels and a more traditional seating area in the back. The yogurt shop's initial hours are 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The business will employ as many as three full-time staff members and 10-12 part-time employees.

CherryBerry targeted the Eagan Promenade because of the high level of traffic in the area and the number of large, well-established businesses nearby, Nelson said.

"It looks like a good, steady daytime location," Nelson said.
