New Eagan Laundromat Has Wi-Fi, Satellite TV, Play Area

Eagan residents Steve and Deb Machacek opened the Cedar Grove Laundromat on March. 13

Apartment tenants can renege on rent, damage a unit or bring in unwanted pets. But laundry machines never give you any trouble.

That's one lesson Steve and Deb Machacek learned after years spent owning and leasing units in apartment buildings across the metro area. The pair of Eagan residents are no longer landlords. Now, they own and operate five laundromats in the southern metro—including a newly-opened facility in Eagan's Cedar Grove area.

"As the economy went bad, people couldn’t pay rent," Deb Machacek said wryly. "We had washers and dryers in our buildings. They never gave us any trouble; you just kept collecting money."

The Machaceks opened the 2,300-square-foot Cedar Grove Laundromat in the The Shoppes at Cedar Grove on March 13. The business features washers and dryers that can handle up to 80 pounds of clothes at a time, plus a variety of features for people waiting for their laundry to be done.

"That's our niche thing; we always have things for people to do," Machacek said. "We always have satellite TV, we always have magazines, vending machines."

The business, she added, is also equipped with wireless Internet and a play area for children.

After their stint as landlords, the pair, who worked for years as a flight attendant and computer technician, began looking to get into small business. The settled on a laundromat service in part because of its low-maintenance nature and in part because of an opportunity to purchase two laundromats that arose in the area.

All total, the Machaceks current own five similar facilities in Savage, Burnsville, Chanhassen and Inver Grove Heights. They have lived in Eagan for decades, and looked for five years for an opportunity to open a laundromat in the city, Machacek said.

"The location with the proximity to apartment buildings and the area we wanted to be in Eagan was good," Machacek said.
