11:11, 11/11/11 - What Does it Mean to You?

It happens once every 100 years; that (some say) magical moment when conformity and uniqueness seem to come together as ‘one’ – or a bunch of them, rather.

11:11, 11/11/11.

For some, it’s just another passing moment in just another day. For others, the multiple number 11s take on deeper meaning.  

What does ‘11’ mean to you? Are you doing anything special mark the day? Does it hold special significance for you?

For Eagan Patch, it happens to be our birthday. That’s right; Eagan Patch turns ‘1’ today and we’re thrilled to have been a part of the Eagan community over the last year and look forward to many more.

We’re not alone in celebrating our birthday. Twins Betsy and Katie Overman from Windsor, Wis., turn 11 on 11/11/11 and each will open 11 gifts after blowing out 11 candles. A promised trip to the Mall of America is also part of the celebration.

And we’re also not alone in having a cause to celebrate, remember, reflect or observe the day in other ways:

Veterans Day

11/11 is Veterans Day, as it has been since 1954 with the exception of a few date-shuffling years in the 70s. The holiday honoring military personnel was originally called Armistice Day beginning in 1919 and is still celebrated as such (or as Remembrance Day) in many other countries.  It was intended as a day of reflection and gratitude to all that had served in World War I. The Armistice marking the end of hostilities was signed at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918. Today we honor all veterans and active service personnel.

Age of Aquarius

YogaSoul Center in Eagan is holding an Open House tonight beginning at 6:30 p.m. to mark the 11/11/11 date. According to a YogaSoul press release, Kundalini yoga practitioners believe today ushers in a “planetary shift in consciousness” and serves as the beginning of the Aquarian Age. Yoga events are planned around the world.

Locally, the Eagan yoga and wellness center will feature a number of free demonstrations, activities, food and instruction. YogaSoul Center is located at 1121 Town Centre Drive, Suite 100 in Eagan.

Minnesota Weather Anomalies

The last time 11/11/11 made an appearance (Nov. 11, 1911) the “Great Blue Norther “ caused temperature swings of more than 60 degrees in many parts of the Midwest. Freak temperature swings say many cities see record highs in the 70s during the day and record lows in the teens by evening.

The Armistice Day Blizzard of 1940 brought a similar 11/11 weather event, this time with heavy snow and 20-foot drifts. Some portions of Minnesota saw close to 30-inches of snow after experiencing unusually high temperatures in the 60s earlier in the day.
