Candidate Filing for School Board to Open on July 30

Filing for the fall election begins on July 30 and ends Aug. 13.

Nearly half of the sitting school board members in District 196 will be up for re-election in fall, and the district has put out a call to all would-be candidates.

Filing begins at the tail end of this month, on July 30.

Three of the seven at-large positions (the seats of sitting board members Art Coulson, Gary Huusko and Mike Roseen) will be up for election in the Nov. 5, 2013 general election. Each seat entails a term of four years, from January 2014 to January 2018.

The two-week filing period for School Board runs from July 30 through Aug. 13, at 5 p.m. 

Qualified candidates must be:

  • eligible to vote;
  • at least 21 years of age upon assuming office (Jan. 6, 2014);
  • a resident of the school district for at least 30 days before the election.

Registered sex offenders are not eligible for candidacy.

Filing materials are available during office hours (7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday) in the Superintendent's Office of Independent School District 196, 3455 153rd Street West, in Rosemount. To file, candidates must pay a $2 filing fee or a substitute a petition with at least 500 signatures of eligible voters.

An affidavit of candidacy can also be filed by five or more voters on a candidate's behalf. The candidate must indicate his or her willingness to serve by signing the application. The same filing fee requirements and deadline apply.
