District 196 Superintendent 'Thankful' for Levy Referendum Approval

Superintendent Jane Berenz of the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District shares her reaction to the approval of the levy referendum.

The Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District levy passed with the approval of about 67 percent of the voters

"We're very thankful to our community for choosing, through the referendum, to invest in our children's education," said District 196 Superintendent Jane Berenz.

She pointed out that the majority of the voters in each of the 14 precincts voted in favor of the levy.

"It’s interesting that it was a community decision and it was great to see the whole community come forward," Berenz said.

The levy referendum asked voters to revoke the district's current $20 million levy and replace it with a new $30 million levy. With the approval of the levy referendum, the district will be able to maintain current programming, grow programs and avoid budget cuts that would lead to higher classes, increased high school sports fees and the cutting of programs.

In addition to the levy referendum, District 196 voters also chose school board members

Voter turnout was 23.5 percent, Communications Director Tony Taschner reported in an email to Patch. The last school district only election was in 2005, and voter turnout then was 20 percent.
