Farmfest

I found the Farmfest show in Redwood County last week to be a wealth of experience and contrast.  It was a nostalgic experience walking through the farm museum and identifying all of the various tractors I operated during my youth.  They seemed incredibly ancient and seriously dwarfed by the massive machines on display throughout the grounds.  It was evidence of the rapid evolution of technology and technique as farming methods have changed in recent history.  Farmfest is in the middle of an expansive landscape which contrasts sharply with the small organic farms and food producers I have become familiar with lately in more metropolitan areas.   It also reminded me of the incredible resourcefulness and ingenuity of farmers both large and small.  Judging by the crowd in attendance, it was clearly evident that this was still a man’s domain and it occurs to me that old fashioned farm girl didn't have the same ring to it as good ole farm boy.  It gave me pause to reflect on the incredible diversity of my own congressional district and the challenges of creating policy that fairly reflects common interests and mutual benefits.  I realize that our leadership reflects our cultural values but also recognize that it also determines the evolution of those values.  It emphasizes once again the importance of protecting our political process to ensure that the values of a single minority shall not be imposed on the values of the majority.
