Inside the apartment, officers located glass jars containing 90 grams of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, cash, a ventilation fan, a journal with "grow" notes, timers, ballasts, an air filter and a food sealer. Hughes and another resident of the apartment were arrested during the raid.

That same morning, officers also executed a second search warrant at an Eagan home owned by Hughes. During a search of the basement, police found fluorescent glow lights, a large tube light, a seed starting heating pad, two exhaust fans, marijuana seeds and a dehumidifier. In a freezer, police located six more bags of marijuana.

Hughes voluntarily gave a statement to police, and admitted that the officers would find marijuana at the house. He denied that there was a grow operation at his home.

Police also questioned his roommate, who told police that she used to live at the home with Hughes, but had never seen him sell it.
