Minneapolis Man Charged Following 100 MPH Car Chase

Police say 48-year-old Steven Jones led officers on a high speed chase through Eagan before he was arrested.

The 100 mph car chase ended with stop sticks, a PIT maneuver and one vehicle in the ditch.

Now, the Minneapolis man police say is responsible for the chase is facing multiple criminal charges.

Steven Jones, 48, has been charged with one felony count of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle and one felony count of fifth-degree drug possession. If convicted of fleeing a peace officer, Jones could face a maximum of three years in prison and $5,000 in fines.

, which started shortly before midnight, according to a criminal complaint filed this week by the Dakota County Attorney's office.

The five-minute long pursuit began on Cedar Avenue, when Eagan police attempted to stop a car that they suspected was involved in an earlier pursuit in Minneapolis, according to the complaint.

But the vehicle fled south on Cedar Avenue, exited on Cliff Road eventually headed north on I-35E. The pursuit hit speeds of 85 mph along Cliff Road, where the marked speed limit is 45 mph, police said. On the freeway, police said, Jones accelerated to as much as 100 mph.

Eagan police used stop sticks to slow the vehicle, then employed the PIT maneuver, which caused the suspect to lose control and stop in the ditch near the exit to Lone Oak Road, police said. There were no other occupants in the car.

Police arrested Jones and searched the vehicle. Officers allegedly found a pipe which tested positive for trace amounts of cocaine.
