Newspaper Deliverywoman Charged with Stealing Packages from Eagan Home

Angelique June Smith faces a felony theft charge after police say she stole packages from an Eagan home over a 10-month period.

A Lakeville woman has been charged with theft after police say she regularly stole packages from the front steps of an Eagan home where she delivered newspapers.

Angelique June Smith, 29, faces a felony theft charge, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

According to the criminal complaint, a homeowner in the 2100 block of Warrick Court in Eagan called police Oct. 25 and reported that packages had been regularly stolen from his front steps over the past 10 months.

The man told that while she was out of town, his wife received an e-mail saying that two packages had been delivered to their home. However, when she returned home, the packages were gone.

The stolen packages contained leather executive notebooks, gloves, clothing from Banana Republic, curtain rods and flower vases, the victim reported. He told police that he planned to set up a video camera to capture images of the person responsible for the thefts.

On Oct. 31, the victim contacted police again and said he had set up a camera and recorded pictures of Smith – the woman who delivered his newspaper – stealing the packages.

On Nov. 3, police put two packages containing laptop computers on the victim’s front steps and waited near the home. Just after 5:30 a.m., police saw Smith approach the home, pick up the packages, put them in her car and drive away.

Police stopped her shortly afterward and arrested her for theft.

Smith subsequently confessed to police that she stole two packages containing infant and toddler clothing, a package containing coats from Cabela and another package containing clothing from Banana Republic.

Smith was released on bond Nov. 4. An omnibus hearing in her case is scheduled Nov. 28 in Dakota County District Court in Hastings.

New, unrelated charges of felony identity theft and credit-card fraud were filed Tuesday against Smith. Patch will have more information on those charges when it becomes available.
