Police Chief Asks Students to Help Name New K-9

The department has a new police dog, a one-year-old Belgian Shepherd.

The has a new police dog, and Police Chief Jim McDonald is asking local elementary school students for help naming the K-9.

The dog, a one-year-old Belgian Shepherd or Malinois, was donated to the department by the Eagan Citizen’s Crime Prevention Association. The canine will attend training later this spring with Eagan police officer Andy Helgerson, according to Eagan Police Department spokeswoman Danielle Anselment.  Helgerson lost his former K-9 partner, Maverick, last year to cancer.

The department plans to collect the name suggestions from local students after noon on Friday, Feb. 3. The following week, police plan to evaluate the suggestions and select a winner.

The winning student will be notified through the school. That student’s class is also eligible for a visit from one of the department’s K-9 teams during a school day. During the visit, the duo would perform a demonstration of the dog’s skills.

In 2009, when the department conducted a similar contest, police received over 1,300 entires from 11 public and private schools in Eagan.
