Eagan police evacuated and surrounded a home on the 1700 block of Deerwood Drive on Wednesday evening, after police say a man issued threats against a family member then barricaded himself in the house.

Police say the incident started with a 911 hang-up just before 4 p.m. on Wednesday, according to a press release issued by the Eagan Police Department. Officers responded to the scene, and learned that the male, who had threatened a family member with a gun, was still in the home.

The family member was able to disarm the man before police arrived, but officers were unsure whether the man had other weapons at his disposal, according to Eagan police spokesperson Jennifer Wills.

For that reason, local police, bolstered by the Minnesota State Patrol, the Eagan Fire Department and the Dakota County Mutual Aid Assistance Group, evacuated the area and blocked off Deerwood Drive, as well as several other streets in the area, Wills said.

At 6:27 p.m., police negotiators made contact via telephone with the man, who agreed to come out of the house without incident, according to the press release. The man was taken into protective custody and transported to a detox facility, where he will be evaluated by medical personnel, Wills said.

Police have not yet released the identity of the man, but Wills said mental health issues contributed to the incident.

"We still need to do some investigation and we still need to interview him," Wills said. "It was a very peaceful resolution, which is what we're always aiming for."
