UPDATED: Eagan Father Faces New Criminal Charges

Steven Ohara Wilson, 52, was charged today with one count of malicious punishment of a child and one count of neglect.

An Eagan father who allegedly punched his son following a basketball game faces new criminal charges, the Dakota County Attorney's office announced today.

Steven Ohara Wilson, 52, was originally charged with one count of misdemeanor domestic assault after allegedly holding his son's head with one arm while using the other arm to punch him after the boy's eighth-grade team lost in a basketball tournament at Lakeville High School. Wilson was arrested on Dec. 10.

But the Dakota County Attorney's office announced today in a press release that it is also charging Wilson with one count of malicious punishment of a child and one count of neglect of a child, both gross misdemeanors. All of these charges will now by prosecuted by the county attorney, the press release said. If convicted of either new charge, Wilson could face a maximum of one year in jail and a $3,000 fine.

According to a criminal complaint filed by the Dakota County Attorney's office on Monday, Wilson initially told police that he and his son had gotten into a disagreement following the game, and that Wilson's son had pushed him around during the altercation. Wilson also claimed that a red mark on the side of his head and two broken fingers were the result of the fight with his son.

But the son, his mother and other witnesses interviewed by police say that Wilson began the fight without provocation, pushing the boy into a wall and taking "several swings" at the boy, the complaint said.

According to the complaint, several nearby parents intervened to break up the fight. Even after the two were split up, witnesses said, Wilson behaved as though he wanted to continue the fight. According to the complaint, Wilson also acted aggressively toward an intervening police officer, and was eventually handcuffed at the scene.

A coach interviewed by police told officers that he had seen similar behavior from Wilson at previous sporting events, according to the complaint. During one game, the coach allegedly told police, Wilson was ejected for swearing profusely and yelling.

Wilson was charged by summons. His first court appearance will be scheduled sometime next month.

Chief Tom Vonhof called the alleged domestic assault of the teenage boy at a basketball game in Lakeville "particularly disturbing" in a release issued earlier this month.

"Parents attending youth sports events have a great opportunity to be a positive role model for kids and that is clearly not what happened here," Vonhof said.
