How Much Did Local Candidates Raise in 2011?

Local candidates are gearing up for the 2012 election cycle, the 2011 campaign finance reports show.

Feb. 1 was the deadline for all political candidates in Minnesota to submit their 2011 receipts and expenditures to the Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board. To see how Eagan's Senate and House candidates fared last year, Patch delved into the reports. Here are the results:

  • The winner in the fundraising race among Eagan's three Senate candidates was Eagan Mayor Mike Maguire, who was able to pull in more than $15,000 in contributions—$12,117 of which came from individual donors. Both Maguire and former Sen. Jim Carlson spent comparatively little money in 2011, and entered the election year with a relatively sizeable bankroll. Sen. Ted Daley spent more than $9,000 in 2011 to print and mail various forms of advertising.
  • In the District 38A House race, incumbent Rep. Diane Anderson (R) outraised her Democratic challengers in 2011. But Gary Hansen, a sitting City Councilor, and Sandy Masin, a former state representative who served until 2010, flexed their fundraising muscles in 2011, as well. Gary Meyer is a relatively late entrant to the field, and may be able to leverage his occupation as a financial executive to gain more momentum in 2012.
  • Rep. Doug Wardlow (R) raised $7,945 dollars from individual donors in 2011, and spent more than $5,500 on printing and mailing advertisements last year. Laurie Halverson, his Democratic foe, raised $6,200 in individual donations and spent $3,000 on campaign stickers, flyers and signs, another $500 for photography and $375 for website-related expenses.
  • The campaign finance report submitted to the Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board by Gary Meyer contained an error. The board routinely sees and handles mathematical errors in campaign reports, according to Executive Director Gary Goldsmith. When the error can't be explained from the report, the board will contact candidates to correct it, Goldsmith said. Meyer wasn't immediately available for comment. Patch has identified the error with an asterisk.
