Editor's Note: The following is a press release from Dakota County.

Pertussis, or “whooping cough”, remains a concern, with more than 260 cases reported in Dakota County this year.

Pertussis can affect anyone, but it can be much more serious in infants. Pertussis is spread through the air by coughing.

It is important that people of all ages be up to date on their pertussis vaccinations. Infants should begin the series of DTaP vaccinations at 2 months of age, receiving five doses before starting kindergarten. At 10 years of age a child should receive a Tdap booster. Anyone 10 years or older who has not had a booster is encouraged to get one now. This is also the season for flu vaccinations – flu vaccine is recommended for anyone 6 months of age and older.

Dakota County Public Health provides reduced-fee immunizations for eligible children and adults. Check our website at www.dakotacounty.us (search “Vaccines”) or call 952-891-7528 for eligibility guidelines and vaccine availability.
