In the end, Maguire and other council members ruled that Varela's offer wasn't a viable offer for the property. The amount offered was significantly lower than the roughly $3.5 million assessed value of property, according to council members.

Maguire's confrontational behavior and aggressive questions were necessary, he said, to evaluate the validity of Varela's offer, but Save Parkview Coalition spokesperson Mark Skweres said the mayor didn't hold developer Hunter Emerson or the current owners of Parkview Golf Course to the same standard, and accused the mayor of bullying opposition to the proposal in a statement issued following the meeting.

Kurt Manley, a Hunter Emerson representative, had a much shorter statement following the meeting. The company, he said simply, is satisfied with the outcome.
