The state debate tournament took place at the University of Minnesota on Jan. 17 and 18. it consisted of three debates: Lincoln-Douglas, Policy and Public Forum.
The Public Forum debate is a team competition. The following teams made it to the final rounds:
Ryan Mather and Mikhil Venkatasubramanian, of Eastview, finished in second place. Aditya Parikh and Aldrin Clement, of Maple Grove, were the champions of the debate.
Other teams in the Public Forum Debate final rounds include:
- Semifinals: Anum Ahmed and Anant Naik, Eastview
- Quarterinals: Mollie Clark and Alexandra Rosat, Eagan; and Andrea Aguilar and Margo Sanders, Apple Valley
This year's topic was: “Resolved: Development assistance should be prioritized over military aid in the Sahel region of Africa.”
In the Lincoln Douglas Debate, Ryan Lowder, of Eagan High School, made it to the semifinals where he faced Arvind Veluvali of Edina.
This year's topic for the Lincoln Douglas Debate was: “Resolved: Developing countries should prioritize environmental protection over resource extraction when the two are in conflict.”
District 196 did not have any students in the final rounds of the Policy Debate.
