First Generation College Students Get Help Applying for Federal Tuition Assistance

College-age, first generation Americans and their families can receive help filling out forms to apply for Federal Student Aid Feb. 27.

The Westcott Library, in association with the YMCA, is hosting College Goal Sunday on Feb. 27.

Volunteers and Somali- and Spanish-language  translators will be on hand at Wescott Library from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. to assist families in completing the sometimes confusing Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is a required first step toward getting federally subsidized grants and loans to pay for post-secondary school tuition.

Federal aid is approved based on family income and need. In order to prepare the FAFSA form, potential students who were claimed as dependents on their parent's 201o federal taxes must bring a copy of that 2010 tax return to the library with them. Those not claimed as dependents should bring a copy of their individual 2010 federal tax return.

According to College Goal Sunday Site Coordinator Shea Peeples, "The program is free and no student will be turned away."

Students who will be enrolled in a post-secondary school during the Fall 2011 semester and have filled out the FAFSA will be able to enter a drawing to win a $500 college scholarship.
