Eagan Hockey: Boys Win, Girls Tie

The Wildcat boys' opened with 8-1 victory over Hastings while the girls' team battled Cretin-Derham Hall to a 2-2 tie.

The Eagan Boys’ Hockey team made a first-game statement with an 8-1 victory over Hastings on Thursday night. The Wildcats open the season with a No. 1 ranking in the state by the Star Tribune and are ranked No. 2 in the state by Let’s Play Hockey magazine.

It took a period to get warmed up, but when they did, they caught fire. After the first period with a 1-1 tie, Nick Kuchera and Will Merchant each added two goals in the second to open up a 5-1 lead. Merchant added another goal in the third for the hat trick en route to the 8-1 final.

The Wildcats next face Eden Prairie on the road Saturday night. Eden Prairie opened their season Thursday night with a 7-5 home win against Bloomington Jefferson.

The Eagan Girls’ Hockey team was also in action Thursday night. The girls’ squad remained undefeated on the season but had to settle for a 2-2 tie with Cretin-Derham Hall.

Sarah Jackson and Brooke Madsen each scored for the Wildcats after Eagan fell behind 2-0 in the second period. The Wildcats are 5-0-1 on the season and next face Burnsville on Saturday in a South Suburban Conference game.
