Donahue loses opener, but bounces back in the consolation quarterfinals to advance in the Class AA girls state tennis singles tournament

Eagan junior girls tennis player Danielle Donahue finished up her run at the Class AA individual tournament on Friday at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center.

Donahue lost to Eden Prairie senior Maddie Buxton by a 6-2, 6-4 margin in the consolation semifinals on Friday morning, ending her state run with a 1-2 record.

Donahue opened up play with a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Wayzata’s Lucia Solis on Thursday, then followed it up by beating St. Paul Central’s Helen Klass-Warch 6-2, 6-2 in the consolation quarterfinals.

Eagan High School junior Danielle Donahue dropped her opening game, but rallied for a win in consolation play to stay alive in the Class AA girls tennis tournament singles competition Thursday doubles Thursday in the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center.

Donahue fell to Lucia Solis of Wayzata 2-6, 1-6 in the first round Thursday morning. In consolation play, Donahue won a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Helen Klass-Warch of St. Paul Central.

Donahue will play Maddie Buxton of Eden Prairie in a consolation semifinal match starting at 8 a.m. Friday. A win would move her into the consolation finals at 11:30 a.m.

Eagan High’s team Elizaveta and Varvara Zelenina won their opening match, but then lost in the quarterfinals of the Class AA girls state tennis tournament Thursday.

The Zeleninas defeated Katie Mattson and Hayley Haakenstad, Chanhassen, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the opening round.

Zelenina and Zelenina then fell to Kylie Boyer and Kate Rosenow of Rochester Mayo 2-6, 0-6 in the quarterfinals and were eliminated from the tournament.
