Sports Roundup: Volleyball, Football, Cross Country All in Action

Two Eagan schools will send teams and individual competitors to the state cross country meet while the Wildcat volleyball and football teams face some tough tests in sectionals.

Eagan sports teams have a busy week ahead as they vie to continue their 2011 seasons or end them with state titles.

Volleyball

The square off against defending state champs and No. 5 ranked Lakeville North tonight in a Section 3AAA semifinal match. Eagan defeated the Panthers in a tightly contested match earlier this year and the rematch will happen at Eagan High School tonight at 5:45 p.m.

Whoever survives tonight’s match will take on the winner of No. 1 ranked Lakeville South vs. No. 7 ranked Bloomington Jefferson to decide who heads to state out of a tough Section 3AAA.

Section finals will be at Simley High School in Inver Grove Heights on Saturday.

Cross Country

The will compete Saturday in the State Class AA championships at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The Wildcats qualified for the meet by winning Section 3AA last week at the University of Minnesota’s Les Bolstad Golf Course.

Junior Sidney Speir qualified individually for the state meet on the boys’ side by finishing fourth overall at the section.

Eagan’s Trinity School at River Ridge is also sending their girls’ team to the State Class A meet. This will be the Tri-Hawks’ first ever trip to state.

Trinity’s Charlie Leighton also qualified for the individual state meet on the boys’ side.

Football

A surging Eagan Wildcat team (6-4) that has averaged 43 points per game in their last four outings, all victories, will square off with undefeated Cretin-Derham Hall on Friday at 7:30 p.m. That game will be played at the University of St. Thomas.

This will be the third straight section final featuring these two teams. Cretin-Derham Hall has won the previous two and is 9-0 against Eagan all-time.

Eagan’s confidence should be high after last week’s . Cretin-Derham Hall defeated East Ridge 44-13 in their semifinal matchup last Saturday.
