Wildcats Crush Jefferson 55-7 For Second Straight Win

Drew Bauer runs for four scores, throws for two more in Homecoming rout.

It was a pretty good Homecoming game for Eagan quarterback Drew Bauer.

The senior signal caller ran for four scores and threw for two more in a little more than two quarters of work, and the Wildcats won their second straight game by routing Bloomington Jefferson 55-7 Friday night.

Bauer finished with 12 carries for 168 yards and was 4-of-7 through the air for 101 more as the Wildcats scored 34 second-quarter points to break open a close game.

It was the second straight week that Eagan crushed an opponent; they beat Apple Valley 41-0 one week ago.

“We just got to keep the confidence going,” Bauer said. “The games are going to get much tougher starting next week.”

That’s when the Wildcats (2-3, 2-2 South Suburban Conference) travel to Prior Lake for the Lakers Homecoming. Jack Kaiser scored on three long runs and Prior Lake (3-2, 3-1) beat Bloomington Kennedy 30-13 Friday.

Bloomington Jefferson (1-4, 1-3) fumbled on its first offensive series, and Eagan quickly capitalized when Bauer went 38 yards untouched for a 7-0 lead.

Trey Blanchard scored from 23 yards out to tie the game, but after a 16-yard pass to Pete Economou and a 16-yard quarterback keeper, Bauer went 51 yards to paydirt. Again, he may have been untouched.

“Whenever they put five (defenders) in the box, we decided our five (on the offensive line) was better than their five so we just ran it,” Bauer said.

For the home fans, it was just the beginning of a joyous night.

Bauer scored on a 1-yard sneak early in the second quarter for a 21-7 lead.

Other than its touchdown drive, which covered 74 yards, Jefferson struggled to move the ball against the first-team Wildcats’ defense, gaining just 32 other first-half yards in six series. Eagan defensive lineman Mitch Johnson and linebacker Alex Mangan had particularly strong games, constantly wrapping up a ball carrier for a short gain or bursting through the line for a sack.

Another Jaguar fumble led to a 12-yard strike from Bauer to a wide open Joey Weaver for a 27-7 lead. It was the first of three straight plays in which Eagan would score.

Bauer found Mack Nelson for a 62-yard score after a Bloomington Jefferson punt, and after another three-and-out by the Jaguars, Michael Busch rambled 34 yards to the end zone and a 41-7 lead.

”We just had our option going so well tonight,” Bauer said.

With the clock winding down in the half, Eagan seemed content to run a couple of plays and go into the locker room with a 34-point lead, but Bauer zigged and zagged before stretching across the goal line for a 40-yard score in the final 20 seconds to make it 48-7.

Backup quarterback Mitch Seidel scored from 14 yards out in the fourth quarter for the final points.

Nelson Marshall came off the bench to rush for 59 yards on nine carries, including runs of 23 and 20 yards.
