Five District 196 Youth Camps You Shouldn't Miss

From fencing to Emergency Room 101, the local Community Education program has plenty of summer camp options to keep your kids occupied.

Fencing

WHEN: 9 a.m. to noon from Monday, July 15 through Thursday, July 19 at Falcon Ridge Middle School.
WHAT:  New and experienced students invited. Get ready to face your foe in mano-a-mano matches that will test your strength, speed, discipline and desire. Improve your dexterity, speed, quickness & focus. Safety is our first priority. Safety swords, protective masks and jackets, and a high-octane, inclusive environment are supplied. Are you ready to duel?

Digital Film-Making and Production

WHEN: 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Monday, June 17 to Thursday, June 20 at Falcon Ridge Middle School.
WHAT: Become a writer, director, actor, special effects creator and editor of your own movie production.  From storyboarding to filming, you will make all of the creative and technical decisions.  Be the on-air sports reporter or producer of a news, weather or sports show!  You devise the format, write the script, record video clips and add special effects.  You will be using HD Video cameras, while experiencing every stage of productions, including planning scripting, shooting and editing.

Video Game Creation: Nintendo Characters

WHEN: 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Monday, June 10 through Thursday, June 13 at Falcon Ridge Middle School.
WHAT: Program your Nintendo characters to move and interact with one another. Learn to change backgrounds, add audio effects, create a pong game and more. Create a dynamic video animation game using Scratch, the innovative programming language created just for students by the MIT Media Lab. Bring a jump drive on the last day of class or files can be emailed to parents.

Emergency Room 101

WHEN: 9:30 a.m. to noon from Monday, June 24 to Thursday, June 27 at Falcon Ridge Middle School.
WHAT: Become a student doctor as you learn about the human body and basic first aid through  hands-on activities in the emergency room. Create a life-size model as you explore the circulatory, skeletal and other human body systems. Participate in a mock emergency situation, create a basic first aid kit, sculpt a heart and more, in the Science Explorers emergency room. This class is taught by Science Explorers instructors, dedicated to helping children learn about their world through science.COST: $99 per person. Grades 1-5. Click here to register.

Amazing Clay and Canvas Creations

WHEN: 10 a.m. to noon from June 17 to June 20 at Falcon Ridge Middle School.
WHAT: Create fantastic clay and painting creations! Discover different painting techniques and tools for unique effects and exquisite canvas masterpieces. Have a blast pinching, pressing, molding and sculpting adorable clay animals.  Play with clay one day, get wet with paint the next. These original projects are messy to make, but fun to create! COST: $99 per person. Grades kindergarten through 6. Click here to register.
