Principal Richard Wendorff takes much pride in Black Hawk Middle School (BHMS), where he has been principal for nine…More years. The school features a unique design, which was made specifically for the "house system" and to better serve middle schoolers. There are eight identical houses at BHMs, all connected to the sky-lit atrium known as Main Street.
The school also offers a block schedule, which means students are in class longer and are able to cover subjects in more depth. BHMS also has interdisciplinary teaching, which means two teachers will cover the same content in different subject areas. There is a door between the classrooms, and the teachers can open it if they want to teach together.
Also, Principal Wendorff noted that BHMS is fortunate to have the support of two high schools, Eagan and Eastview. Students will move on from BHMS to either Eagan or Eastview high schools.
Black Hawk Middle School has a multicertified staff who are able to teach many different content areas.
In addition, there is an award program and ceremony each trimester for students recognized for co-curriculars or academics, among other reasons. The school also gives students with a 3.5 GPA and higher the Presidential Academic Excellence Award.
Lastly, BHMS has a WEB program, which stands for "Where Everyone Belongs." Eighth grade WEB leaders help new sixth grade students adjust to middle school life.
