Friend of Eagan Car Crash Victim Creates a Scholarship in His Name

Sean Choi wants to create a legacy for deceased Eagan High School student Ahsim Ahmed, who was killed in a car crash last year on Diffley Road.

Sean Choi doesn't want closure. To Choi, closure means that he'll have to move on from the death of his friend, Ahsim Ahmed, who was killed in a car accident last year along Diffley Road in Eagan. Closure means he would have to leave Ahmed's memory in the past. Instead, Choi wants to remember him—to build a legacy for Ahmed, an Eagan High School graduate who touched many lives, including Choi's. Which is why, in the months following Ahmed's death, Choi and several other students began raising money. At first, they wanted to donate the money to Ahmed's family. Eventually, however, the group decided to create a $500 Eagan Foundation scholarship in Ahmed's name. "I have a strong idea that he really is still with us in spirit," said Choi, who …

UPDATED: Undiagnosed Medical Condition May Have Been Factor in Fatal Diffley Crash, Police Say

The March 17 accident killed 18-year-old Ahsim Ahmed and 42-year-old Kelly Kristiansen, both of Eagan.

Eagan High School graduate Ahsim Ahmed may have been traveling at speeds in excess of 100 mph moments before a fatal accident that claimed his life and the life of Eagan resident and hockey coach Kelly Kristiansen, according to a recently completed police investigation. Expert analysis and eyewitness accounts point to Ahmed's speed and erratic driving as the causes of the fatal accident, which took place on Saturday, March 17, near the intersection of Diffley Road and Amberleaf Trail. Witnesses interviewed by police saw Ahmed's vehicle drive off the roadway, strike a traffic sign, cross the median and narrowly miss hitting another car before finally colliding head-on with the vehicle drove by Kristiansen. Kristiansen, who was driving …

Just wanted to point out, for future articles, and to be clear regarding issues of fault, that "received medical attention for an undiagnosed fainting condition" is incongruous. If the attention was received, then more than one person knew that Ahmed had a fainting condition, yet he was still behind the wheel of a car. The proper care taken upon receiving such a diagnosis may have saved both …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: What Ahsim Ahmed Meant to Me

Gregory Hunter Freebeck pays tribute to his college roommate and close friend Ahsim Ahmed, who died in a two-car collision on Saturday.

Ahsim Ahmed was an 18-year-old young man killed in a fatal car accident on March 17, 2012. This is the news that everyone is hearing about him, and that his mother described him as “a bright boy with lots of friends.” There is so much more to this young man that could ever fit into a newspaper article. My name is Gregory Hunter Freebeck, but I go by Hunter. I am 19 years old and I am from the south suburbs of Chicago Illinois. I graduated from Lemont High School and am attending the University of Iowa, as well as 10 of my good friends from my hometown. Coming into school, I thought I wouldn’t need to meet anyone new, because I had all of my friends from home here. One day I heard a kid across the hall from me playing [music from] Eminem …

Community Remembers Eagan Car Crash Victims

Ahsim Ahmed Jr., 18, and Kelly Kristiansen, 42, were killed in a two-car collision on Saturday evening in Eagan.

Chris McDonald first learned of Eagan High School graduate Ahsim Ahmed Jr.'s death in a car accident on Saturday night, when he started receiving text messages from members of the EHS Debate Team. McDonald, the debate team coach, worked for three years with Ahmed, who was a member of the debate team from his sophomore year onward. McDonald remembers him as a quiet, upbeat student who usually said hello when he passed in the school hallways. "You never get used to anyone dying in that manner, but you know that it happens," McDonald said. "When it intersects that closely with your life, it reminds you that life is precious and unpredictable." Ahmed, 18, was one of two people killed in a two-car collision near the intersection of Diffley Road…
