Red Cross Blood Drive on Saturday at Wescott Library

Every day, patients across the country rely on blood and platelets donated through the American Red Cross.

Follow Eagan Patch on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Sign up for our daily newsletter | Blog for us The Red Cross will be holding a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wescott Library in Eagan. Every day, patients across the country rely on blood and platelets donated through the American Red Cross. While the need is ongoing, the supply isn’t — especially around the holidays, when regular donors travel and spend time with family and friends and may forget to schedule an appointment. The only way to provide lifesaving blood and platelets for patients in need is through the generosity of donors. Donors can help the Red Cross maintain a stable blood supply this holiday season by making an appointment to donate at redcrossblood.org or 1-800…

Something meaningful like a blood donation is a gift that doesn’t cost a thing but can give joy and hope to a hospital patient in need. Heather Aagesen-Huebner of Eagan knows firsthand the importance of giving blood. Her husband, Jon, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and required several hospitalizations and many blood transfusions to live. “I know how crucially important it is to have blood available when a loved one needs it because it helped save my husband’s life,” said Aagesen-Huebner. “I’m so grateful to the people who donated blood so that it was …

Culver's Owners Carve Out Unique Niche in Community

Clint and Gloria Racine were recognized by Congressman John Kline for their dedication and contributions to Eagan.

Generosity is an essential part of Clint and Gloria Racine's business model. The Racines tirelessly host and help promote American Red Cross blood drives in Eagan, sponsor 10 schools and one nonprofit organization and support charity field trips and school activities—all while running the day-to-day operations of the Culver's Restaurant in Eagan, of which they are the sole owners. Sound like a lot? Second District Rep. John Kline (R) thought so too. The Congressman honored the Racines last week with his "Star of the North" award at a special ceremony in Lakeville. The Racines were one of 40 recipients of the award, and serve as "an inspiration to us all", Kline wrote in a press release. Clint, who worked for 25 years as a regional sales …

VIDEO: Red Cross Recruits Fresh Blood at Eagan High School

The American Red Cross expected as many as 200 students to attend an annual Blood Drive at Eagan High School on Monday.

High school and college students account for as much as 20 percent of the blood collected by the American Red Cross, according to Red Cross spokeswoman Sue Gonsior. And that's why blood drives, like the one held on Monday at Eagan High School, are so important, Gonsior said. The Red Cross expected as many as 200 students to attend the blood drive held in the school's gym on Monday morning. The event is organized in part by student volunteers like Maddie Banz and Jill Haugan. For junior Tony Sarne, the blood drive was an opportunity to follow in his father's footsteps. "I've done donating because my Dad has donated eight gallons, and I decided that this was a good opportunity to pass on the torch," Sarne said. Be sure to follow Eagan Patch …

Excessive Heat Watch Issued For Eagan

Prolonged heat and humidity could be dangerous for Eagan residents.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch for Eagan, and prolonged heat and humidity could be dangerous for residents. The heat and humidity is set to begin Sunday afternoon and will continue through Wednesday evening, according to the National Weather Service. Heat indices are expected to surpass 105 degrees for several hours at a time in the afternoon and early evening, with overnight lows reaching only 70s and 80s. This could create a dangerous situation, the weather service says, and they urge people to stay cool by drinking plenty of fluids, finding air-conditioned places in which to spend time, and staying out of the sun. They also urged people to check up on neighbors and relatives. The American Red Cross also …

Spring Has Sprung...

...at the Diffley Square First Annual Spring Fling

Minnesota is not known for palm trees, tropical beaches or fruity drinks with cutesy names attached to them.  But, if you were to ask anyone across the country what they do know about our fine state (and us), a few of the descriptions you’re bound to hear are: The winters are cold; They have tons of beautiful lakes, and; The people have that little thing called 'Minnesota Nice' going for them. Well folks, after another brutally cold winter, the snow has melted, we can launch our boats out onto the lakes again and 'Minnesota Nice' was alive and well at the Diffley Square Spring Fling on Friday. This free family event was sponsored by Diffley Square and The American Red Cross and offered plenty of opportunities to visit businessowners and …

Bloodmobile Looking To Refuel At Spring Fling

Up to 20 percent of blood donations come from high school and college blood drives during the academic year.

The American Red Cross (ARC) is one of several public and private entities involved in Eagan's Diffley Square Spring Fling on June 3 and, as it turns out, the event comes at a crucial time for the organization. A common cycle occurs within blood donation that sees individuals—due to vacations, summer activities and school completion—donate less and less as summer progresses.  The decline in donations can lead to blood stocks that are critically low.  "Up to 20 percent of blood donations come from high school and college blood drives during the academic year. But the need for blood is constant and eligible donors of all blood types are needed," explained ARC spokesperson Sue Gonsior.  "Blood is a perishable product. Red blood cells have a …

Eagan High School Blood Drive: A Family Tradition

Since Kristen Banz spearheaded the first EHS blood drive in 2006, her sisters have continued coordinating the effort.

The American Red Cross collected 126 units of blood Friday at Eagan High School during a 4-hour blood drive. According to Red Cross Donor Recruitment Representative Mike Fries, the general public would be "surprised to learn how many units of blood are donated in the spring by high school and college students."  Fries said young people are the main reason there are generally no pleas for blood donors this time of the year. Most high schools that hold blood drives will do so in the spring so the maximum number of students can donate; the legal age to donate blood is 17, although 16-year-olds are allowed to be a donor with parental permission.  When asked, many students joked that they donated because they got out of class and were given …
