Qualifying for the Class 2A boys hockey state tournament is a "huge step" for the Eastview High School hockey program, Head Coach Drey Bradley told reporters on Thursday night. Despite a tough, 6-3 loss to the top-ranked Hill-Murray Pioneers in the opening round of the tournament, Bradley was optimistic. The Lightning have a well-balanced crop of sophomores and juniors rising through the ranks—including sophomore goalie Zachary Driscoll, who gave a strong performance in the section playoffs. Propelled by a 4-1 victory over Eagan High School, the Eastview High School boys hockey team is heading to state—the team's first appearance at the tournament since 2001. Eastview, 15-9-1 in the regular season, will have its work cut out for them as the team faces top-ranked Hill-Murray (22-2-1), which has qualified for the tournament seven of the last eight years. Eastview High School dashed the Eagan High School boys hockey team's hopes for another trip to the state tournament on Thursday night in a decisive, 4-1 victory at the Section 3AA championship game in St. Paul. Eastview's John Snodgrass and Cole Cooper scored in the first period to give the Lightning an early 2-0 lead. The Lightning expanded that lead, scoring additional goals in the second and third periods. With a little less than five minutes left in the third period, Wildcats forward Zach Glienke put one past Eastview goalie Zachary Driscoll, giving Eagan its only goal of the game. The state hockey tournament begins at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, for the Eagan High School boys hockey team. The Wildcats, who have been seeded third in the tournament, will play Moorhead at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The high school will have a limited amount of tickets for the tournament available this week. Tickets for students go on sale on Tuesday, but the general public will not be able to purchase tickets until 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the high school's Spirit Hall. Upper Bowl student tickets are $11 and all lower bowl and and club level tickets are $17. Students who plan to attend the game must have a signed parent permission form. Eagan's best offense Wednesday was its defense. Will Merchant scored twice short-handed, the Wildcats penalty kill was perfect, and Eagan the South St. Paul Premier Tournament, beating the host school 4-1. It was the second straight year, and third time since 2004, that the Wildcats have won the holiday gathering. Ryan Nelson and Brady Loew also scored for Eagan (6-2-1), which has won four straight and beat North St. Paul 7-0 Monday and Woodbury 5-1 Tuesday.
