Longer Liquor Store Hours Coming to Eagan?

The Eagan City Council is weighing an ordinance change that would permit off-sale liquor stores to remain open until 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday—two hours later than the current standard.

That's the question facing the Eagan City Council, which took up the issue on Tuesday night during a special council meeting. Under the current city regulations, liquor stores can be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. But the council is weighing an ordinance change that would permit stores to remain open two hours later on Monday through Thursday. It doesnt prevent anything to close liquor stores at 8pm, nor could it make things worse to be open till ten. The people that get drunk and cause trouble will do that no matter what, rather they buy at 5pm or 10 in Eagan, or not. Let the owners decide when they want to close. They know their area and customers, so it should be their decision.   more ›

City Changes Rules Governing ... Carrier Pigeons?

You heard me right. Eagan City Code has a chapter on carrier pigeons.

City officials had a hard time holding back their tongue-in-cheek comments last week, as the Eagan City Council took action to amend its rules governing carrier pigeons. "Carrier pigeons?" I thought, as I reviewed the council's agenda for the evening. "Why would the city have an ordinance on carrier pigeons?" After talking with the city's communications director, Tom Garrison, it turns out that the city's ordinance is an old, quirky rule inserted into the City Code. But just because it hails from another era doesn't mean it doesn't serve a purpose today, Garrison was quick to point out.
