Karen Kitchel, founder of nonprofit group Cheerful Givers, also mentors twin girls through Kids 'n Kinship.
Eagan resident Karen Kitchel is known across the state for her work founding and directing the nonprofit Cheerful Givers—which provides disadvantaged children with birthday gifts. But Kitchel also gives back to the community in other ways—and it's one of those less visible contributions that earned her a Community Spotlight nomination from Kids 'n Kinship Program Coordinator Rita Younger. For eight years, Kitchel has been a mentor for twin sisters and local students Nyamal and Nyamuoch. "Karen has helped the girls in so many ways: Discovering their interests, developing their personalities, being a resource of support and information and loving and supporting them through many family challenges," Younger wrote in her recommendation. Eagan resident Scott Swenson's list of contributions to the community is nearly endless.
Some volunteers are so interwoven into the fabric of Eagan that they seem omnipresent, an integral part of nearly every organization or community initiative. Eagan resident Scott Swenson is one of those people. The list of local organizations that Scott Swenson has volunteered for is nearly endless, which is why Patch chose to recognize this longtime Eagan resident with a Community Spotlight profile. Swenson's enthusiasm for volunteer work goes back to his college days, when he was a member of a service fraternity. "I didn’t realize it right away, but I kind of figured out that we could make a difference and have fun at the same time," Swenson said. Since then, Swenson has taken on significant leadership roles at All Saints Lutheran Church…

Longtime Eagan Athletic Association volunteer Dean Kraus had an indelible impact on the organization. Kraus is the latest recipient of Eagan Patch's Community Spotlight award.
A father of three, Eagan resident Dean Kraus knows all too well how quickly children grow up. "It’s a short window of time that you get to be a part of your kid's life," Kraus said. "I'd feel bad if I sat at home and my kids were out doing something." Which is why Kraus got involved as a volunteer the Eagan Athletic Association. Over the course of a decade, he has coached soccer, baseball, basketball, lacrosse and football—all so he could spend time with his children and impact the lives of others in the program. In that time, Kraus also served as a sports director and board member for the association. His dedication to the organization has earned the admiration of other members of the Eagan sports community, including Tim Czaja, who …

Diana Fowls and Keri Johannes felt they had to do something about an unsightly park entrance. So they started a garden.
Overrun by weeds, the entrance to Blackhawk Park off Riverton Avenue in Eagan was an eyesore, according to neighbors Keri Johannes and Diana Fowls. So the pair, both avid gardeners who lived adjacent to the park, took matters into their own hands. Over the last four years, Johannes and Fowls have developed and maintained a substantial garden at the park entrance, investing hours each week weeding, watering, planting and pruning during the growing season. Their volunteer efforts attracted the attention of neighbors and park-goers, whose litany of compliments and thank yous are all the motivation this pair needs to continue their hard work. Their dedication and strong sense of community also caught the eye of Eagan resident Sarah Burrill, …
