Dakota Among 'Dangerous DWI Counties' According to Minn. Department of Public Safety

Extra DWI patrols will continue in the 13 counties through September 2013, as part of a 12-month, federally funded enforcement program.

Dakota County ranks fifth overall, behind only Hennepin, Ramsey, St. Louis and Anoka counties.  From 2009-11, Dakota County recorded nine alcohol-related deaths and 40 alcohol-related accidents (see attached PDF)—figures the DPS estimates cost the state $14.6 million. Eagan Ranks Seventh in Number of DWI Arrests During Statewide Initiative

Eagan officers arrested 22 intoxicated drivers during Minnesota's "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" enforcement campaign.

Last week, the city found itself near the top of another, less desirable list. Eagan ranked seventh out of 315 reporting agencies in the number of DWI-related arrests during a statewide "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" enforcement campaign, according to information released by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. The Eagan Police Department arrested 22 intoxicated drivers during the initiative, which began on Aug. 17 and ended on Sept. 3. Eagan is also listed as the eighth largest city in Minnesota, so just by population you could expect we would have close to that many DWI arrests. I am not condone DWI, but I think we also need to recognize the excellent job the Eagan Police Department is doing stopping these people from driving while under the influence.   more ›

Eagan, Dakota County Targeted For Increased DWI Enforcement

From 2008 to 2010, Dakota County had 15 alcohol-related deaths and 42 alcohol-related injuries.

Dakota County is among 13 counties in the state being targeted for increased DWI enforcement through September by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) Office of Traffic Safety. The counties, including Hennepin, Ramsey, Anoka, St. Louis, Wright, Olmsted, Rice, Washington, Stearns, Sherburne, Scott and Carver in addition to Dakota, were chosen because they have the highest combined totals of alcohol-related traffic deaths and serious injuries and will be hot-spots for increased DWI enforcement through September. From 2008-2010, those counties combined for 202 alcohol-related deaths—nearly half of the entire state's as well as half of the state’s serious injuries, 462.
