Inver Grove Heights resident Heather Walseth, an ESL teacher in Rosemount and Eagan, finished the marathon 10 minutes before the bombing.
At first, Heather Walseth thought the rumble she heard was thunder. But then Walseth, who had just finished the Boston Marathon, looked back toward the finish line to see smoke rising. That's when the second explosion detonated. "At that moment, I realized something was terribly wrong, and my first instinct was to get out as fast as I could," said Walseth, an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher at Rosemount High School and Deerwood Elementary School in District 196. Walseth completed the race roughly 10 minutes before the first of two explosions ripped through the crowd gathered near the finish line on Boylston Street in Boston. Deerwood Elementary School Principal Miles Haugen told members of the Minnesota Senate the implementation of full-day kindergarten is a "necessity".

On Thursday, Haugen joined School District 196 Director of Elementary Education Julie Olson and other school officials to advocate for a bill that would provide state funding for the implementation of voluntary, full-day kindergarten in schools across Minnesota. The school received a $100,000 grant from Target late in January.
Deerwood Elementary School, the fortunate recipient of a $100,000 grant from Target, has decided to much of the money to renovate its playground. On Thursday, the school's site council unanimously approved a plan to use $80,000 of the grant money for the school's playground. School officials also called for the creation of a six-member committee to determine how to use the remaining $20,000 to support a student learning initiative. The committee will meet in the coming weeks to establish guidelines for spending the money, identify financial needs and finalize the plan. The school is one of 50 schools in the nation to receive grant from Target, school officials announced today.
Deerwood Elementary School in Eagan was one of 50 schools across the country selected to receive a $100,000 grant from Target Corporation, school officials announced on Wednesday. The school plans to convene a series of meetings with staff, Site Council and Booster Club members over the next few weeks to determine how to use the money, according to a letter from Deerwood Principal Miles Haugen. Last November, Haugen wrote, The Ellen DeGeneres Show announced that Target planned to give out $100,000 grants to 50 schools in the United States.
