The school's seventh- and eighth-grade students helped build an outdoor classroom at the Eagan Fire Safety Center and conducted a neighborhood clean-up in the area, according Faithful Shepherd Executive Director John Boone. Other school students cleared litter from local parks, planted seedlings on teh school campus and completing other projects, Boone said. Eagan firefighters also brought the students on a tour of the safety center, with an emphasis on the eco-friendly aspects of the Green Globe-certified building.

Eagan Fire Department Wants Your Junker Vehicle

Every year, Eagan fire officials use donated junker vehicles for traffic accident training.

Editor's Note: The following is a press release from the city of Eagan. Do you have an old car to get rid of? The city needs junkers for Fire Department training. Each year, the Eagan Fire Department trains its 100+ volunteers in how to safely extract people from vehicles following a crash. These trainings are essential considering the department responds to approximately 150 vehicle accidents or fires each year. “This kind of training requires vehicles for crews to practice on,” says Pat Diloia, Assistant Fire Chief. “Sometimes local towing companies can supply cars, but we have an ongoing need.” Individuals interested in donating a vehicle can receive a tax credit. The department will provide a receipt for tax purposes and donated …

Local Artist Turns Back Time with Eagan Fire Department Painting

Eagan resident Larry Landis was asked to paint a 50th anniversary piece for the fire department. The end result is a rich tribute to the city's history.

For Eagan resident Larry Landis, it was uncharted territory. A hobbyist painter all his life, Landis honed his skill creating still life portraits and commemorative retirement prints for local firefighters. Never had he attempted something as ambitious as the painting Eagan Fire Chief Mike Scott proposed last year. Looking for a local artist to create a 50th anniversary piece for the Eagan Fire Department, Scott approached Landis and asked him to paint a scene straight out of Eagan's history: The department's first fire engine, nicknamed Jenny, cruising past the old Trinity Lone Oak Church at the intersection of Hwy. 149 and Lone Oak Road. The catch? The painting had to be set in the early 1960s, long before the development of any of the …

Don't Forget to Dig Out Your Fire Hydrant

Clearing the snow from around the nearest fire hydrant will save firefighters precious time in the event of an emergency.

Editor's Note: The following is a news release from the city of Eagan. The winter months bring a special concern to the Eagan Fire Department. Winter snowfall and the plowing of snow can often hide fire hydrants under a large amount of snow making them impossible to find quickly.  In the event of a fire, firefighters have to locate and shovel out fire hydrants before hooking up to them. Precious time is lost doing this. Please don’t let your neighborhood hydrant remain “under cover”. Firefighters are asking that residents help keep the fire hydrant closest to their residence or business clear of snow. A three-foot clearance is needed on all sides. When shoveling snow, be aware of vehicle traffic. Do not stand in the street, and be careful …

Minnesota Energy representatives contacted emergency responders at 11:11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 6, to report the leak, according to a news release issued by the Eagan Police Department. Technicians were called to the area when a resident reported the strong smell of natural gas in her home. Police and fire units closed a nearby road, evacuated the homes and notified 20 other residences in the area via an automated telephone messaging system. Eagan Council Outlaws Grill Storage on Some Outdoor Balconies

The residents of many of the city's larger apartment complexes will no longer be able to store grills on their patios. The ordinance will improve fire safety at those buildings, according to the city's fire chief.

Want to store your grill on your apartment's outdoor balcony? Better think twice, thanks to an Eagan ordinance amendment passed Tuesday night. Last year, the Eagan City Council prohibited the use of gas or electric grills on the outdoor decks or balconies of housing complexes that have three or more units sharing a common connecting hallway. On Tuesday, the council took that rule one step further, voting unanimously to ban not only the use but the storage of grills on the decks of those housing complexes. It was always the city's intent to ban both the storage and use of grills on those outdoor balconies, Eagan Fire Chief Mike Scott said. But a mistake in the wording of the original statute, approved in May 2012, allowed residents to …
