Eagan YMCA's New Director Has Local Credentials

Mike Lavin, the Eagan YMCA's new director, has developed sports camps in Eagan and has expanded a District 196 childcare services program.

Dakota County Junior Master Gardener Program Finds New Home at Eagan YMCA

After losing its established home in UMore Park, the Dakota County Master Gardeners have relocated their youth program to Eagan.

The Eagan YMCA's community garden, founded last year, will soon be home to the Dakota County Master Gardeners' Junior Master Gardener program. The Junior Master Gardener Program, open to youth ages 8-13, provides exposure to various plants, the environment and the joy of community service. The program also promotes healthy eating, a connection to nature, and life and science skills, according to a news release issued by the Eagan YMCA. In the past year, the master gardener program lost its established home at the UMore Park property in Rosemount, when a portion of the area was opened to gravel mining. Eagan YMCA Marks Senior Health and Fitness Day with Health Fair, Open House

Take part in a free-throw contest, pickleball and line dancing, or learn about health and health care from a variety of industry professionals.

To mark the 20th annual National Senior Health and Fitness Day, the Eagan YMCA will hold a full-day open house and a health fair on May 29. Current YMCA members, guests and all other community residents are invited to attend the open house, which will include a free-throw contest, shuffleboard, a putting contest, plus pickleball, line dancing and group exercise. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., the Y will also host a health fair, with representatives of chiropractic care, orthotics, physical therapy and health care organizations planning to attend. The purpose of National Senior Health and Fitness Day is to promote active, healthy lifestyles through phsyical fitness, good nutrition and preventative care. Eagan YMCA Hosts Jingle Bell Jog 5K and Breakfast with Santa

The fourth annual breakfast event is open to Eagan, Apple Valley and Rosemount families and will be held at the Eagan YMCA. Community members are invited to jog a 5K around the Eagan YMCA facilities at 8:30 a.m. Breakfast will be held from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. following the run. Eagan YMCA's New Garden Will Grow Produce for the Needy

The YMCA broke ground Friday on a 900-square-foot community garden.

It will cover 900 square feet, it will provide an outdoorsy educational experience for area youth and it will bring together a handful of area businesses and organizations. But mostly, a new community garden at the Eagan YMCA will provide cartloads of fresh produce for needy local families, thanks to a partnership with the Eagan and Lakeville Resource Centers. On Friday, the Eagan YMCA broke ground on the 26-foot-by-36-foot community garden, which is located near the Y's childcare entrance at its facilities at 550 Opperman Drive in Eagan. Eventually, YMCA officials hope the garden can grow tomatoes, peppers, squash, zucchini and other vegetables for the food shelf for use in the nonprofit's "Gardens to Tables" program. Eagan YMCA …
