The Eagan girls hockey team is heading to state following a 2-1 win over Apple Valley earlier this week. The Wildcats outshot Apple Valley 29-6 in the first two periods of the game, and survived a third-period push by their opponents at the Class 2A Section 3 championship game held at Veterans Memorial Community Center in Inver Grove Heights. Alanna Stangl and Emily Johannes scored Eagan's two goals. Megan Wolfe had two assists. The girls finished the season with a 22-3 record. Eagan is the first team to qualify for state. After every section championship result is known the tournament will be seeded. The hockey team will play on Thursday, Feb. 23, but a time for the game has not yet been set. Both will play NCAA Division 1 hockey at the University of Maine, according to the Minnesota Hockey Hub.
Will Merchant and Sam Wolfe may have toured the University of Maine within two weeks of each other, but their decisions last week to commit to play hockey at the school were made separately, according to the players. “I knew he was talking to them, but that didn’t really influence me that much," Merchant told the MN Hockey Hub, which published an article on the pair of seniors early this week. Merchant is a candidate for Minnesota's prestigious Mr. Hockey award, and Wolfe has racked up an impressive two goals and 22 assists so far this year, according to the article. Now that the decision has been made and the pressure is off, Wolfe told the MN Hockey Hub he can once again focus on playing hockey for the remainder of the season. “This …

Eagan High School's Nordic Skiing teams had strong performances at the section meet in Wisconsin.
Boys Basketball: Eagan came away with a pair of wins after last week's games against Burnsville and Lakeville North. The boys basketball team won 64-45, with Shea Mandli scoring 16 points and Nick Sabatke tallying 15 points. Sabatke has scored 351 points this season—an average of 16.7 points per game. Mandli is not far behind, with 329 points this season. Eagan took down Lakeville North 49-39. Girls Basketball: The girls basketball team lost two back-to-back games against Burnsville and Lakeville North last week. The Wildcats were beating Burnsville by one point at halftime last Friday, but were outscored in the second half. The final score was 52-56. Will Merchant and Michael Zajac are both in the running for the Mr. Hockey award.
Eagan High School boasts not one, but two finalists for the Mr. Hockey award, given out annually by the Minnesota Minute Men. Wildcats forwards Will Merchant and Michael Zajac are among the 10 finalists in the running for the award, according to an announcement posted Thursday to the Minute Men website. The only other Minnesota city to have two finalists is Duluth. The award is given to Minnesota's outstanding senior high school hockey player, and is selected by a panel of National Hockey League Scouts, Division One coaches and selected media members from around the state, the organization wrote in a press release. Boys Basketball: The Wildcats improved to 11-8 on the season after coming away with two wins and a loss during last week's match-ups. The boys beat Bloomington Kennedy 75-60 on Jan. 31, despite being outscored 40-32 in the second half of the game. On Feb. 3, Eagan High School lost 52-49 to Eastview, with Drew Bauer and Eric Woodcock scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively. The boys' fortunes improved on Monday, when they dismantled Bloomington Jefferson 61-29. Nick Sabatke led the boys in that game with 17 points. Girls Basketball: The Eagan girls basketball fought back to win by one point in an edge-of-your-seat game against Bloomington Kennedy on Jan. 31. Boys Basketball A multi-faceted offense led Eagan to a 55-46 victory over Prior Lake on Tuesday, Jan. 24. Nick Sabatke and Isaiah Pearson led the Wildcats with 13 and 11 points, respectively, but three more Eagan players notched eight points apiece. Eagan followed it up with a 76-65 win over Lakeville South on Friday. Sabatke scored a whopping 29 points during the game. Girls Basketball The Eagan High School Wildcats lost a close game against Prior Lake last Tuesday, despite outscoring Prior Lake 27-19 in the first half. The girls couldn't hold onto the lead, however, allowing 38 points in the second half. On Friday, however, Eagan beat out Lakeville South by 10 points in a 55-45 game. Boys Basketball The boys basketball team started the week with an 84-68 loss to Apple Valley on Tuesday. Eagan trailed 51-32 at the end of the first half, but was able to regain some momentum in the second half. The team was led by Shea Mandli, who scored 23 points throughout the game. The Wildcats followed up on Friday with a handy 76-49 win over Rosemount, before losing again on Saturday against Owatonna. The boys are 7-7 on the season. Boys Basketball The Eagan High School boys basketball team took it on the chin in the 80-40 loss against Eastview on Tuesday. The Wildcats were held to only 16 points in the second half of the game—less than half of the points tallied by Eastview during the same period. The team rebounded with a close, 56-54 win over Bloomington Jefferson later in the week. The team is currently 5-4 on the regular season. Girls Basketball Despite a great individual effort by Sammie Delzotto, who scored 19 points, but the Wildcats fell to Eastview 74-53 on Tuesday.
