Each year, Rick Anderson hosts an annual bike sale—the proceeds of which he donates to a local mentoring organization.
Mentoring made a difference for Rick Anderson, who faced a tumultuous childhood growing up. "I know what it’s like to grow up in a crappy household. I could’ve gone a different direction, and I didn’t," said Anderson. "I think the guidance I got from those informal situations, that was part of the reason I didn’t." It's only natural that Anderson, an Apple Valley resident who works as an independent insurance agent, would want to give back. For years he has mentored two boys through Kids 'n Kinship, a local nonprofit that pairs youth in Dakota County with adult mentors. Karen Kitchel, founder of nonprofit group Cheerful Givers, also mentors twin girls through Kids 'n Kinship.
Eagan resident Karen Kitchel is known across the state for her work founding and directing the nonprofit Cheerful Givers—which provides disadvantaged children with birthday gifts. But Kitchel also gives back to the community in other ways—and it's one of those less visible contributions that earned her a Community Spotlight nomination from Kids 'n Kinship Program Coordinator Rita Younger. For eight years, Kitchel has been a mentor for twin sisters and local students Nyamal and Nyamuoch. Head out onto the ice and support a local nonprofit organization at the same time as part of a family-friendly Kids 'n Kinship fundraiser at the Burnsville Ice Center on Sunday, March 17. The event runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Rink #2 at the ice center. The cost of the event is $10 per person or $30 per group of four. Cookies and hot cocoa will be included as part of the event. Kids 'n Kinship has been matching children living in Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Farmington, Lakeville and Rosemount with adult mentors for over 40 years.
