UPDATED: Prosecution Broke Rules in Kurt Virgin Investigation, Attorney Alleges

Kurt Virgin, a well-known coach and sports camp coordinator at Eagan High School, was accused of stealing thousands from the school district. But the allegations aren't true, his attorney says.

Follow Eagan Patch on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Sign up for our daily newsletter| Blog for us Do prosecutors have a case against Kurt Virgin, a former sports coach and camp coordinator accused of swindling money from Eagan High School? Not according to Virgin's defense attorney, Paul Rogosheske. Rogosheske filed for a contested omnibus hearing during Virgin's first appearance in Dakota County court on Tuesday. In his filing, the attorney argues that much of the prosecution's evidence in the case is inadmissable because the prosecution broke the rules by using information gathered by the school district in its questioning of Virgin regarding his potential misconduct. Earlier this year, Virgin was charged with six felony counts of …

UPDATED: Former Coach Kurt Virgin Charged with Swindling School District

The former Eagan High School soccer and basketball coach faces six counts of theft by swindle. Authorities say he took more than $29,000 from the school district.

For two years, investigators say former Eagan High School boys basketball and soccer coach Kurt Virgin was skimming money from sports camp registration fees and team fundraisers. After a months-long investigation, the Dakota County Attorney's office on Thursday charged the 60-year-old Eagan resident with six felony counts of theft by swindle. A single count of theft by swindle carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and $10,000 in fines. The school district put Virgin on leave late last year. Virgin tendered his resignation in January, following an announcement that Eagan police had opened an investigation into his actions as a manager for three sports camps in the district.  But the criminal complaint reveals that the well-known…

Eagan High School's New Soccer Coach Brings Bevy of Experience

Lifelong soccer devotee and retired professional player Alan Merrick will take the helm of Eagan High School's soccer program.

Eagan High School's new soccer coach is a "legend", in the words of EHS Athletic Director Sandra Setter. Late last week, Setter announced that the high school hired lifelong soccer devotee and retired professional player Alan Merrick to serve as the head of the school's boys soccer program. The program was left leaderless earlier this year, after former Head Coach Kurth Virgin resigned amid an investigation into potential financial misdeeds by school district and police officials. No formal police charges have yet been filed against him. Merrick, a native of Selly Oak, England, brings decades of soccer experience to his position as the high school's new head soccer coach. The now-retired professional soccer player got his start in the …

However, the police have assigned an investigator to the case, who will determine if any criminal activity occurred, Anselment said. Just wondering if anything was ever found to be legally wrong with the way the summer camps were run and if in fact Kurt Virgin should receive a public apology for only giving summer camps to help athletics better themselves. He stepped down but was any wrong doing ever proven or any legal actions taken agains him? We was an excellent coach. Sad to see him gone if there was no just reason for it.   more ›
