Memorial Day BBQ? 8 Money-Saving Tricks (Sponsored)

Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? If the weather holds and you’ve got propane or charcoal, chances are, you’re grilling something with your friends and family. Here, new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.

Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbeque experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party.   1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead -- say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled ribeye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbeque grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but avoid cola which is so acidic it can turn meat into a soggy mess.” Try…

Decades Later, Eagan World War II Gunner Gets the Medals He Deserved

Wencel "Chum" Bohr's B-29 bomber barely made it back from a bombing raid over Tokyo in 1945.

It wasn't Wencel Bohr's first bombing run over Tokyo during World War II, but when his plane, struck by flak, collided with another bomber, he and his crewmates thought it could be their last. "We were coming over Tokyo, and all the anti-aircraft went off like mad," said Bohr, who served as a gunner on a B-29 bomber in 1944 and 1945. "It hit us real bad; it knocked out an engine, and that forced us to drop and lose speed." The situation went from bad to worse moments later, when the plane lost its rudder following a mid-air collision with another bomber. Still, Bohr's pilot managed to regain control of the B-29; hours later they landed safely on Iwo Jima. "It was a hair-raiser," a grinning Bohr said at his Eagan home on Thursday. Earlier …

What's Open and Closed on Veterans Day?

Veterans Day is Sunday, but some local businesses and organizations may be closed Monday.

Veterans Day, Nov. 11, falls on a Sunday this year. That means some city offices, services and local businesses will be closed Sunday, while others will be closed Monday. Veteran Day "originated as 'Armistice Day' on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I, according to the U.S. Census website. "Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars."

One thing we can do, "beyond the yellow ribbon", is to find ways to consider military resumes on a level playing field with civilian resumes, when the veterans hang up the uniform and seek to resume their civilian status among the rest of us. Military resumes do look different, even though outprocessing teaches how to civilianize them. HR often doesn't bother to consider equivalencies even when …   more ›

Eagan Senator Sponsors Tax Break for Filmmakers

The proposed bill would give qualifying filmmakers a tax credit equal to 25 percent of an individual or company's production expenses for the project.

Eagan Sen. Ted Daley (R) hopes a tax incentive will entice movie production companies to bring their money—and jobs—to Minnesota. Last week, Daley introduced a bill that would give filmmakers shooting in Minnesota a tax credit equal to 25 percent of an individual or company's qualifying production expenses for the project. Rep. Greg Davids (R) originally introduced the measure in the Minnesota House of Representatives on March 5. Daley is sponsoring the Senate's companion bill, which was referred to the Senate's Taxes Committee for consideration. In order to receive the credit, the applicant must meet several criteria, according to Daley's bill. The movie must be a feature-length film or nationally syndicated TV series, and the producers …

Eagan Turns Out For First Memorial Day Tribute

Those in attendance were treated to a rousing speech from decorated war veteran Lt. Col. (ret.) Joe Repya

Eagan mayor Mike Maguire was joined by a bevy of local officials at the inaugural Memorial Day celebration at the city's new Tribute and Memorial Plaza at Central Park.  Tom Mullon, commander of American Legion Post 594, orchestrated the celebration with the help and careful planning of Margo Danner, Eagan resident and past president of the Lioness Club. "This is an opportunity to recognize those who have made the ultimate sacrifice," Mullon said. "We want that number to remain as low as possible but we must continue to protect the freedom we enjoy everyday." The event drew a healthy crowd and featured speeches from 2010 Senator Jim Carlson, Police Chief Jim McDonald, Fire Chief Mike Scott and retired Lt. Colonel Joe Repya. "This is a …
