After removal dates, shelters may remain on the ice between midnight and one hour before sunrise only when occupied or attended.
Follow Eagan Patch on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Sign up for our daily newsletter | Blog for us Editor's Note: The following is a news release from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Minnesota’s ice fishing shelter removal dates are approaching, and dark houses, fish houses and portables must be off Eagan lakes no later than midnight on March 4. Enforcement action will be taken if shelters are left after the deadlines. Those not removing shelters will be prosecuted. Conservation officers may remove the structure and confiscate or destroy it. Eagan council members voted last night to give Eagan Fire Chief Mike Scott the sole authority to place or lift citywide burning bans. Councilors hope the shift will make the city more responsive to quickly changing fire conditions.
Follow Eagan Patch on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Sign up for our daily newsletter| Blog for us Eagan City Council members voted unanimously on Tuesday night to give the city's fire chief, Mike Scott, the power to enact or lift temporary burning bans. Previously city ordinances dictated that only the council could approve or remove citywide burning bans. But that approach, city officials believe, lead to unnecessary delays. Typically, city officials follow recommendations issued by Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, which is considered to be the statewide authority on fire conditions. "The problem is that the DNR can lift the ban, but we have to come back to the city council to have official action to undo it on the city's part…

The state's deer hunting season begins on Nov. 3, and officials at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources say the take should be good due to a spike in the deer population.
Follow Eagan Patch on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Sign up for our daily newsletter | Blog for us Hunters are in for a heck of a deer season this year. So says the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, which estimates that there are about 1 million deer in the state. “Minnesota’s deer population is up from last year, in part, because of the mild winter,” Lou Cornicelli, the DNR’s wildlife research manager, said in a press release. “Mild winters result in more survival of adults, more fawns being born, and more deer in the state’s fields and forests the following hunting season.” However, the population is not evenly distributed and in 2012 there are fewer areas where hunters can legally harvest more than one deer. The agency has …

Eagan police and animal control responded to an alleged black bear sighting near Meadowland Park. At this point, the sighting is unconfirmed, Eagan Police Chief Jim McDonald said.
Follow Eagan Patch on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Sign up for our daily newsletter | Blog for us Eagan police are treating a potential black bear sighting near Meadowland Park as "unconfirmed", Eagan Police Chief Jim McDonald said on Thursday. A husband and wife walking along Highline Trail near the park claim they saw a fully-grown black bear and called police to report the sighting just after midnight on Tuesday morning, according to Eagan police reports. The woman told police she and her husband made noise and took off running after coming within 50 feet of the animal, which was allegedly spotted in the backyard of a home on Fox Ridge Court. Although confirmed bear sightings do occasionally occur in Eagan and other Dakota County …

The weather forecast for Monday and Tuesday has raised fire dangers.
Follow Eagan Patch on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Sign up for our daily newsletter Monday’s warm and breezy weather conditions might seem ideal for a stroll in the park, but they have public safety officials worried. The National Weather Service in Chanhassen has issued a Red Flag Warning for much of Minnesota. Also, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has classified Dakota County with a "high" fire danger rating. The culprits for the fire concerns are above-average temperatures, windy conditions and extremely low humidity. RED FLAG WARNING Here is the text of the weather service’s Red Flag Warning, which was issued at 11:32 a.m today: ...RED FLAG WARNING ACROSS ALL OF CENTRAL INTO SOUTH CENTRAL MINNESOTA TODAY AND TUESDAY...…

Asian carp could be inevitable in Mendota Heights area waters, according to Pioneer Press report.
Regional residents have formed "Friends of Pool 2," a grassroots organization dedicated to enhancing and protecting Pool 2 of the Mississippi River, according to a report by the Pioneer Press. Pool 2 is identified as the area from the Ford Dam to Hastings. Their most urgent concern is the probable invasion of Asian carp into local waters. The DNA of the fish was found just north of Pool 2 in Coon Rapids last winter. Once an Asian carp population establishes itself, it will muscle out other fish and gobble up resources, officials say. Silver carp, known to leap out of the water at the sound of boat motors, also pose a hazard to boaters. Do you spend time on the Mississippi River? You can help The National Parks Service by being a spotter. …

Park proponents hoped state grant funding would enable the city to purchase a portion of the park for preservation.
Follow Eagan Patch on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Sign up for our daily newsletter For decades, Eagan resident Tony Caponi has worked to preserve Caponi Art Park, a 57-acre artistic and educational platform situated among rolling, wooded hills in the heart of Eagan. Caponi's long pursuit of that goal has given the 91-year-old a certain amount of perspective and patience—especially when the park preservation effort hits a bump in the road. In March, Eagan city officials applied to two separate Minnesota Department of Natural Resources grant programs for $400,000 in funding. That money was to be the lynchpin of a roughly $1.2 million public funding package that would allow the city of Eagan to purchase a portion of the park for …

No one was injured in the incident, which occurred after 9 a.m. on Monday.
A would-be ice fisherman took an unexpected dip in Fish Lake when the Ford Escape he was driving fell through the ice on Monday morning. Eagan Police and Fire Department units responded to the incident, which occurred around 9:20 a.m., and were able to remove the vehicle from the lake with the help of a tow truck. The vehicle fell through in roughly 2.5 feet of water, Eagan Police spokeswoman Danielle Anselment said on Tuesday morning. There were two adult occupants in the small SUV at the time of the incident, Anselment said. Neither was injured. The man was able to get out of the car and get to shore, where he called emergency services, Anselment said. The fire department was able to chisel away the ice around the vehicle and remove the …
