Taya N. Clifford, of Eagan, was driving a 2007 Mazda passenger car on Hwy. 13 in Eagan when her vehicle was struck by a Dodge Caravan driven by 53-year-old Michael A. Klasen of St. Paul, according to the state patrol. The Pioneer Press reports that Clifford lost control of her vehicle, which spun into oncoming traffic and was broadsided by Klasen's van. The former Senate staffer and Eagan resident was seriously injured on Jan. 23 when he lost control of his vehicle on the Interstate 35E bridge near Lilydale.
Eagan resident Michael Brodkorb—a former Senate staffer whose meteoric rise in the GOP ranks once made headlines—now faces criminal charges in connection to a traffic accident in January. Lilydale City Attorney Thomas Lehmann charged Brodkorb with two misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree DUI, one misdemeanor count of careless driving and one petty misdemeanor seatbelt violation, according . If convicted on one of the DUI charges, Brodkorb could face a maximum of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. The seatbelt violation is a petty misdemeanor punishable with a $300 fine. The former Republican staffer had an alcohol concentration of 0.10, above the limit of 0.08 for impaired driving, according to a urine sample analyzed by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. A little history: The state’s first DWI Law enacted was in 1911. When baby boomers began to drive in the 1960’s more than 60 percent of traffic deaths were due to drinking and driving. This started to decrease in the 1980s. Currently about 30 percent of all fatalities are alcohol related. The earliest record of traffic deaths was in 1910, with 23 fatalities. Systematic record keeping on crashes started much later in the 1930s. Who and how many: Over 570,191 Minnesotans [10.7 percent] have one or more DWIs on record. Of licensed drivers in the state, 1 in 7 have one or more incidents on record, 1 in 17 have two or more and 1 in 30 have three or more.
