While their peers are out on vacation, these Pilot Knob students are getting an academic boost—and enjoying it.
DeMarcus Stransky didn't seem to mind that he was still in school last week while many of his peers were out visiting family or flying to warmer destinations during District 197's week-long Spring Break. In fact, the 9-year-old student at Pilot Knob Elementary School in Eagan said he was downright enjoying the extra class time that he and roughly 70 other Pilot Knob students got last week, during Pilot Knob's "Spring Break School" program. "We’ve been going bowling and it feels different; we don’t really get homework, and we do more stuff," said Stransky. Pilot Knob's Spring Break School, pioneered five years ago by Principal Tom Benson and school staff, is a chance for elementary students to get extra academic support prior to the …

Pilot Knob first grade teacher Ikhlas Abdelkhalig receives $10,000 Outstanding Educator Award for Teacher Achievement.
For Ikhlas Abdelkhalig, a first grade teacher at Pilot Knob STEM Magnet School in Eagan, the news came out gradually Friday afternoon at an all-school assembly. First she learned a Pilot Knob teacher was being honored, and then a first grade teacher. But the big news, the one Pilot Knob principal Tom Benson was busting to spill, caught her by surprise. She was the winner of a WEM Foundation's 2011 Outstanding Educator Award for Teacher Achievement, along with a $10,000 cash prize. "It's kind of like ... so touching, you just don't know what to say," said Abdelkhalig. "When you think about your students, and the journey I have been having with my students, and how they work hard and all of that ... and it is really reflected in the students…
District 197's new magnet program coordinator, Marilynn Smith, sat down with Patch to answer questions about the school district's three new magnet schools.
The West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan School District received a $2.2 million federal grant last fall to develop three new magnet schools. Patch sat down for a Q&A session with Magnet Program Coordinator Marilynn Smith to learn more about the process underway. Patch: Before this school year the district had a single magnet school, correct? Marilynn Smith: Prior to getting the grant there was one magnet school, Garlough Environmental Magnet School (in West St. Paul), and that school has been in place four years as a magnet school. They had a series of state grants to kind of get up and running. And the district itself learned quite a bit in that process about recruiting and developing a strong program and supporting teachers with learning…
One teacher takes extra time out of her day to post pictures of students artwork online
One Pilot Knob Elementary art teacher is taking the initiative to feature students' artwork on the popular Web site Artsonia.com. Although there are only a little over 200 pieces of Pilot Knob's artwork on the site now (which can be found at www.artsonia.com/schools/pilotknob1), Pilot Knob Art Specialist Katie Wiley wishes she could do much more. "It's just in the beginning stages," Wiley said. "I did it years ago when the Web site just came out and I've been wanting to do it again." Visitors can browse through the artwork in the school's gallery by grade level, or by specific exhibits, according to Wiley. Pilot Knob students' artwork is joined by thousands of students from over 100 countries on the site. "It's used a lot by art …
District 197's Choice Fair will give education options to families
Ever wonder if you had choices in which school you sent your child to in the district? Maybe one elementary offered classes more suited toward your child? District 197 will hold its first-ever Choice Fair and Open House on Jan. 10. from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. in Henry Sibley High School's cafeteria (1897 Delaware Ave., Mendota Heights). It will be a great place to help those parents deciding where to send their student or pre-school-aged student. It will also allow parents to learn more about the district, in general. The district offers four magnet schools, including Eagan's Pilot Knob Elementary, three neighborhood schools and one unified high school. Representatives from all eight schools will be able for questions and present …
Parents receive information on Internet safety during a presentation at Pilot Knob Elementary.
"How many of you have a computer in your home?" Karina Berzins recently asked a classroom of fourth graders at Pilot Knob Elementary School. Most kids raised their hands. "How many of you have your own computer in your room?" she continued. Many hands rose again, but she didn't seem surprised. "Now, how many of you have your own cell phone?" Berzins, training and education coordinator at Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, has asked these questions at schools statewide. More and more children are being introduced to technology at a younger age, she said. Since she has started at the bureau, Berzins has presented her Internet Safety presentation to more than 35,000 students, teachers and law enforcement officers in the state of …
