A Dakota County SWAT team helped Hastings police arrest an Apple Valley man that police believed was high on methamphetamine and in possession of a handgun. The officers arrived at an apartment in Hastings and took the suspect's girlfriend into custody, but police learned the man had escaped out a back window. Officers allegedly found a handgun, drugs and ammunition during a search of the apartment. A short while later, the suspect was found walking barefoot in the cold outside near the residence. Sheriff's officials described the scene as a case of "snow bumper cars."
The Monday storm that dropped several inches of snow and brought high winds to Dakota County had another unfortunate side-effect, according to the Dakota County Sheriff's Office. Because of poor conditions, nine vehicles collided in a case of "snow bumper cars" on Dodd Road south of County Road 70, sheriff's office officials said. All drivers were traveling at relatively low speeds, sheriff's deputies said. The crash resulted in minor injuries to several drivers. Dakota County Sheriff's Office officials dove into Crystal Lake in Burnsville last Saturday as part of the South Metro Polar Plunge.

More than 1,000 participants raised $250,000 for the Special Olympics during the event. The Explorers along raised roughly $5,200 for the event, the Sheriff's Office dive team helped remove ice for the plunge and Sheriff's Deputy Jen Lenarz helped organize much of the event. On a separate note, Dakota County Sheriff's Office deputies collected and disposed of 1,500 pounds of prescription medication through Dakota County's drug disposal program. There are currently three drug drop-off locations in the county, but that number will be expanded to seven locations over the next two months.

The explosive devices were disposed of by the Bloomington Bomb Squad. On a separate note, Dakota County Jail inmates were visited by the University of Minnesota's head football coach, Jerry Kill.
