Propelled by a 4-1 victory over Eagan High School, the Eastview High School boys hockey team is heading to state—the team's first appearance at the tournament since 2001. Eastview, 15-9-1 in the regular season, will have its work cut out for them as the team faces top-ranked Hill-Murray (22-2-1), which has qualified for the tournament seven of the last eight years. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 7 at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul. Hill-Murray may be a daunting first-round opponent for Eastview, but the Lightning have only allowed a single goal so far in post-season play. The Lightning performed a piece called “Bolero” to win the high kick title. It was the seventh overall title for Eastview, winning previously in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2012. Brainerd was second in the high kick competition, followed by Burnsville, Wayzata, St. Cloud Tech and Maple Grove. After pulling out a last-ditch victory in the state Pokémon tournament last week, 12-year-old Matthew Pappas was rendered speechless. Pappas, a 12-year-old Black Hawk Middle School student, was one of more than 100 participants drawn from across the Midwest to play in the Pokémon Trading Card Game State Championship—held at Legion Games in Burnsville on March 24. Armed with custom-built decks filled with cartoonish monsters, special abilities cards and other powers, participants are divided into three age divisions to compete against fellow collectors and game enthusiasts. The state hockey tournament begins at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, for the Eagan High School boys hockey team. The Wildcats, who have been seeded third in the tournament, will play Moorhead at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The high school will have a limited amount of tickets for the tournament available this week. Tickets for students go on sale on Tuesday, but the general public will not be able to purchase tickets until 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the high school's Spirit Hall. Upper Bowl student tickets are $11 and all lower bowl and and club level tickets are $17. Students who plan to attend the game must have a signed parent permission form. The Eagan High School boys hockey team defeated Hastings 10-1 in Thursday night’s Section 3AA championship game at the State Fairground’s Coliseum. Eagan will advance to the Class AA state tournament. This victory comes on the heels of a highly successful season for the Wildcats, whose record prior to Thursday’s game was 23-3-1. The Wildcats took an early lead, and held on to it for the entirety of the game. “We got on them pretty quick,” said head coach Mike Taylor. “We had good energy right from the drop.” Eagan scored four goals in the first period alone, and continued to dominate throughout the second period, in which they scored three goals. The Eagan High School girls hockey team will challenge the top-seeded Minnetonka High School girls hockey team during their first state tournament game on Thursday evening. The battle begins Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Xcel Energy Center. Click here for the tournament bracket. Minnetonka (25-5-1) is defending its 2011 Class AA State Hockey title against the Wildcats (22-3-3). Eagan took down Apple Valley 2-1 in the Class 2A, Section 3 championship game last week. Roseville is the No. 2 seed in the state tournament and will play Grand Rapids/Greenway on Thursday at 11 a.m. If Eagan wins, the team play again at 8 p.m. on Friday.
