Diana Fowls and Keri Johannes felt they had to do something about an unsightly park entrance. So they started a garden.
Overrun by weeds, the entrance to Blackhawk Park off Riverton Avenue in Eagan was an eyesore, according to neighbors Keri Johannes and Diana Fowls. So the pair, both avid gardeners who lived adjacent to the park, took matters into their own hands. Over the last four years, Johannes and Fowls have developed and maintained a substantial garden at the park entrance, investing hours each week weeding, watering, planting and pruning during the growing season. Their volunteer efforts attracted the attention of neighbors and park-goers, whose litany of compliments and thank yous are all the motivation this pair needs to continue their hard work. Their dedication and strong sense of community also caught the eye of Eagan resident Sarah Burrill, …

Dan Johnson’s term as a member of the City of Eagan’s Advisory Airport Relations Commission is up and he plans to reapply. He says other residents should apply to serve on one of Eagan’s four advisory commissions or on the watershed management organization that Eagan, Inver Grove Heights and Mendota Heights jointly manage. No special expertise is needed, just a willingness to get involved to serve your community in a limited way. As Johnson sees it, that’s what helps keep Eagan great: “The City of Eagan is nationally recognized as a great place to live,” Johnson says. “…

The school dad's club hosts fundraisers to benefit the booster club.
A group of Eagan fathers are working together to give back to the community through the Thomas Lake Elementary School Dad’s Club. “It’s an opportunity for participation for dads,” said Christopher Nelson, whose daughter attends second grade at Thomas Lake. “It feels like the right thing to do.” Nelson works with several other Thomas Lake dads to organize events and volunteer at school functions. All the proceeds from dad’s club events benefit the school’s booster club. The dad’s club movie nights, which take place two or three times throughout the school year, have been especially successful, with as many 120 students attending each one. Parents are able to drop off their children at school, and enjoy a night out, while the dad’s club …

Showcase Eagan drew a large and happy crowd Thursday to its citywide open house, which is held once every two years. More than 60 community and civic organizations, city government departments, local non-profits, associations, churches and other groups set up shop for an afternoon in one half of the Eagan Civic Arena. The organization representatives were eager to tell their stories, answer questions, or even better, attract new volunteers. Kids activities reigned in the other half of the arena, with free food, games, face painting, balloon art and several demonstrations by local dance groups. Outside visitors could …
