At least according to Eagan High School Athletic Director Sandra Setter. Michelson, hired earlier this year to replace retired Coach Steve Van Dyne, will take over head coaching responsibilities for the Wildcats girls swim team when their upcoming fall season starts on Aug. 12. Michelson, who grew up swimming for Henry Sibley High School, has three years under his belt as the head coach for the Burnsville High School boys swimming program. In that three-year stint, Setter said, Michelson took a small program and grew it—leading students to individual success at state swim meet the last two years …

Van Dyne announced his retirement in an email to high school parents last week. Van Dyne, a former collegiate swimmer at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D., took the coaching job in Eagan in 1997, after serving as the Richfield High School boys swimming coach and in local club programs. Rosemount’s Brandon Ekeren kicked a game-winning 31-yard field goal with just 12 seconds left to lift the Irish past the Wildcats. The Irish won with a final score of 17-16. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 0-4 in the South Suburban Conference and 0-5 on the season. It was the second straight heartbreaking loss for the Wildcats, who lost to Eastview 15-12 last week.
