Eagan Police Investigating Garage Burglaries: Crime Alert

Thieves gained access to a home and vehicle through unlocked doors.

The Eagan Police Department is reminding residents to lock garage doors after a couple of recent burglaries, including one in which someone entered a home.

Police responded to a burglary at a home on Bear Path Trail around 3 a.m. on Sept. 27. Someone gained entry to the home by using a garage door opener that was found in an unlocked vehicle in the driveway, police said in Monday's crime alert. The thief entered the home by way of the unlocked service door and stole items, such as a purse and money clip, before quickly leaving.

In the second instance, police responded to Deer Hills Trail on Sept. 28. A thief entered the garage through an unlocked door and stole a wallet from a vehicle.

These types of crimes are preventable, police said in the crime alert. Residents should remember to:

  • Lock garage doors.
  • Remove personal items and garage door openers from vehicles parked outside.
  • Lock vehicle doors.
  • Lock doors that lead from the garage to the home.
  • Remind neighbors to close their garage doors.

Police encourage residents to report suspicious activity by calling 911.
